AOD clinician: Alcohol and Other Drug Clinician. See Part 5 of this Guide.

Category 1 offences: Offences are categorised according to section 6 of the CPA.

CDA: Criminal Disclosure Act 2008.

Charging document: A charging document is the formal method of accusing someone of breaking the law. For more information, see Part 4(C) of this Guide.

CPA: Criminal Procedure Act 2011.

Diversion: An alternate resolution scheme designed to assist first time offenders. For more information see Part 5 of this Guide.

FCLN: Forensic Mental Health Court Liaison Nurse. See Part 5 of this Guide.

Infringement notice: A document with information about your infringement.

Justice of the Peace/JP: A Justice of the Peace is a person of good standing in the community who assists in administrative and (sometimes) judicial tasks. The plural is ‘Justices of the Peace’. It is shortened in this guide to ‘JP’. For more information, see Part 1 of this Guide.

Leave: Permission from the court to do something, such as appeal a decision.

LTA: Land Transport Act 1998.

Registrar: A court official who assists in the processes of the court and assists with a judge’s directions. The registrar also makes decisions about some things like some timetabling.

SA: Sentencing Act 2002.

Service: Giving a copy of document(s) or other material to other parties of the proceedings and/or the court.

SPA: Summary Proceedings Act 1957.

Submission: An argument given in court, either written or spoken.

Summons document: A document which legally compels you to attend court (or respond in some circumstances).


Traffic Court/JP Court: Various names are given for the sitting of the District Court presided over by Justices of the Peace. Sometimes community magistrates will preside over traffic court.
