Protection mechanisms
A person putting material on their site that they wish to protect - that is, prevent others from copying - should clearly attach notices stating who owns copyright in material on the site, what is permitted and not permitted with material on the site, and who to contact for a copyright clearance in relation to any material on the site.
Other protection mechanisms include:
- making protected material accessible only on payment of a fee or acceptance of contractual terms of use (this can often be done using a program called RMI)
- advising the internet service provider of restrictions to be placed on access to protected material on the site
- encrypting (that is, using a technological means to prevent copying).
